Discovery Elementary School, as part of Arlington Public Schools, must abide by federal regulations regarding student data privacy that require parental consent as outlined below.
Arlington Public Schools evaluates and manages the distribution of county-wide apps and services available on student-issued Personalized Learning devices, such as the iPads used by Discovery Students. Additional services require, in some cases, additional specific parent consent.
We use an electronic form, available by clicking here, to record that consent when required. This form must be signed annually by parents in order for students to receive the services indicated below.
Discovery uses several computer software applications and web-based services, operated not by Discovery or APS, but by third parties.

None of the resources listed in Included Services markets or advertises to students in any way at the time of this document. If any of these services change to include marketing of any kind, Discovery Elementary School will immediately discontinue use of such services.
Directory and Account Information
In order for students to use these services, accounts must be created for them. Certain personally-identifiable information – generally the student’s name and student ID number – must be provided to the service provider to accomplish this. What constitutes Directory Information under APS policy is available in the APS Handbook, in the Student Services section, on page 16, titled Directory Information.

The electronic form constitutes verifiable parental consent for Discovery Elementary School to act as an agent on behalf of you, the parent(s), to utilize the personally-identifiable information described in Directory and Account Information above, solely within an educational context, in order to provide accounts and/or access to the specific resources listed in Included Services above.

The electronic form constitutes verifiable parental consent for Discovery Elementary School to provide information described in Directory and Account Information above to the service operators found at the URLs listed in Included Services above. This form also constitutes verifiable parental consent for Discovery Elementary School to utilize services that may store student data, such as performance on a skill or task, related to the service or app. The specific information that may be stored by those third parties are available on each individual application’s websites as listed above.

Discovery Students are protected by the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment, abbreviated PPRA. You can learn more about PPRA at http://familypolicy.ed.gov/ppra.
Discovery Students will not engage in any surveys, analyses, or evaluations that request data protected under the PPRA, using any of the resources listed in Included Services above. Signing this form does not waive your rights or your student’s rights protected by the PPRA.
Without receipt of a signed form, Discovery will be unable to provide your student(s) access to the resources listed above in Included Services. Instead, your student will receive equivalent non-app-based resources.
Verifiable Parental Consent
As parent or guardian of the student referenced below, I hereby provide this verifiable parental consent to the disclosure of information as described above, and to the storage of related educational progress information within the above-listed Included Services, so that my child can use those Included Services offered by the online service providers listed.
