Discovery Earns EcoSchool’s Green Flag Award!

Discovery Elementary was awarded the Green Flag Award by EcoSchools U.S., a branch of the National Wildlife Foundation, the highest level of EcoSchools certification. Students, staff, families, and the community participated in actions throughout the school year that contributed to this award.

Students participated in over 100 hours of outdoor learning, implemented almost 900 energy conservation actions, diverted 3,000 pounds of waste from landfills, added 11 bird houses to our campus, and grew and donated over 1,000 heads of lettuce in our hydroponic gardens this school year.

Documentation was submitted to EcoSchools by sustainability leaders at Discovery that detailed nine different actions completed in the 2023-2024 school year. These actions included composting, diverting textile waste, hydroponic and outdoor gardening, creating wildlife homes, “impact storytelling” about our Eco Action bird house project, diverting food waste via our “Food Bus,” updating our Eco Code, monitoring “Energy Vampires,” and maintaining our Eco Action team.

Thank you to all students, staff, parents, and community members for continuing to support our efforts to be a leader in green and sustainable school culture. We are already looking forward to continuing the work next school year with exciting old and new projects!
