Purple Star Support for Military Families

The morning of October 9, 2019, we received notice from Daniel Dunham, Military Student and Families Specialist with the Virginia Department of Education, that Discovery Elementary School had been named Arlington’s first Virginia Department of Education Purple Star Designation Program School. “The Council applauds and appreciates your school’s outstanding commitment to serving the needs of military students and families,” the notice said, referring to the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on the Educational Opportunity of Military Children. “Your dedicated program truly serves as an inspiring model for other schools across Virginia.”

This past spring, Discovery added the Military Families page to our website, available through various points of entry, including Counseling, About Us, the quicklinks menu in the lower left, and our Community and Family audience portals.

We also established a “buddy program” that will pair incoming military-connected families with students with similar experience, so that students have direct support and mentoring as they join our community, be it for a Permanent Change of Station, a deployment, or any other circumstance that may impact military families.

Ms. Claire Nawojchik, School Counselor, and Ms. Sandra Amores, Registrar, work in concert with Mr. Keith Reeves (the Technology Coach at Discovery) to provide support to our military-connected families.9
