As a school counselor, it is my role to help students achieve social, emotional, and academic success. My goal is to teach and reinforce coping and self-advocacy skills that students will need throughout their lives. I hope to inspire, support, and advocate for all students and encourage them to find and use their voice and to feel self-confident and self-assured. This year I will work primarily with Discovery 1st and 2nd grade students but look forward to working with and getting to know all Explorers!
I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in English from Queens University of Charlotte in 2008 and then went on to earn my Master’s Degree in Education and Human Development with a Concentration in School Counseling from George Washington University in 2013. In the second year of my graduate program, I joined the Arlington Public School family as a Jamestown Elementary school counseling intern. Directly after that experience, I took on a full-time elementary school counseling role at Triangle Elementary in Prince William County, where I worked for four years, until transitioning to APS in 2017 to work as a part-time counselor at Carlin Springs Elementary. This year, I am excited to be at Discovery Elementary School on Thursdays.
My favorite thing to do in my free time is spending time with my family – including my husband, 4-year-old son, 2-year-old daughter, newborn daughter and our two dogs, Izzy and Tuna. I also enjoy exercising – especially Pilates and yoga and traveling whenever there’s an opportunity. The furthest place I’ve been was Yap – a tiny Micronesian island on the other side of the world, where I worked on marine conservation and learned how to scuba dive. On one dive I even saw a whale shark – the largest shark in the world!
One of my favorite books is Nugget and Fang by Tammi Sauer and Michael Slack. The story follows a fish named Nugget and a shark named Fang and explores their relationship with one another. It delves into the importance of and power behind friendships, kindness, and acceptance and inspires me to embody those qualities every day.
