My job as a classroom teacher is to create an inviting community where social, emotional, and academic growth are equally important. I strive to provide an environment where children feel safe and excited to learn, addressing the individual needs, challenges, and hopes of my students. In my classroom, students and teachers are readers, writers, scientists, historians, mathematicians, and partners who share strategies, ideas, and excitement for learning with one another.

Professional Background

I graduated with a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Marymount University. This will begin my 21st year of teaching elementary school. In my 19 years in Fairfax County, I taught first grade for 15 years. My other experiences included one year providing enrichment and intervention to K-6 students in Reading and Math, one year teaching advanced academic curriculum to 3rd graders, teaching 2nd grade for 2 years at Haycock Elementary, and now I’m starting my 3rd year at Discovery in 3rd grade. I am an Arlington native who attended Glebe, Swanson, and Washington-Lee. I am looking forward to being a part of the Arlington community as a teacher!

Personal Interests

During breaks from school, I can be found traveling to new places with my husband, Tom, and daughters, Laine (12th grade at Yorktown), and Avery (8th grade at Swanson), organizing the dive team at Overlee Pool, walking my dog, Tanner, or watching my daughters’ gymnastics and diving meets. I also enjoy photography, hiking, reading on my Kindle, hiking and baking.

Literary Connection

One of my favorite books is Gooney Bird Greene by Lowis Lowry. Gooney Bird, the main character, moves to a new town and attends a new school. As her new classmates get to know her, they realize that Gooney is a wonderful storyteller who shares the most descriptive and captivating stories about everyday events in her life. This book reminds me and my students that as writers we can create interesting and captivating stories about our everyday lives by zooming in on the details of the moment! I’m excited to share this story with my new 3rd grade class. Gooney Bird and Lowis Lowry will become wonderful mentors to them as writers!
