Wayfinding

As students at Discovery Elementary School progress through each grade, their experience of the school itself grows and expands to mirror their learning experiences. Grades K, 1, and 2 are on the ground level, the Earth, and progress from Backyard to Forest to Ocean. Grades 3, 4, and 5 are on the upper level, the Sky, and progress from the Atmosphere to the Solar System to the Galaxy.

Each grade level area is color-coded and has a distinct experiential logo representing their realm of study. Each room in the region has a unique placard on the door with a uniquely-corresponding name, picture, and description. Instead of “Room 200,” a room in Atmosphere might be called Tornado, or a room in Galaxy might be called Nebula.

    

    

    

The main corridor of the school welcomes students into the Wayfinding way, featuring plastic disks for each student to sign – literally to make their mark on their school – as they join their grade levels each year.
